BNO & SPEX CertiPrep Group Launch Two New Websites

SPEX_CP_SP_HOME

Following a considerable amount of hard work, on Friday, September 10, 2010, SPEX CertiPrep Group went live with two extensive and feature-laden websites, designed and developed by BNO. The sites are SPEX CertiPrep (www.spexcertiprep.com), which markets and sells Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) to scientists and laboratories throughout the world, and SPEX SamplePrep (www.spexsampleprep.com), which markets and sells sample preparation equipment for analytical spectroscopy.

The Case for Flash

flashSteve Jobs did an interview session after the Apple keynote last week where he covered, amongst other things, his attitude to Google and Adobe Flash. The man didn’t mince with words, branding Adobe as “lazy” and Google’s “don’t be evil” mantra as “bull****”. I have a lot of respect for him, but I must admit to being disappointed with his comments.

Apple’s enmity with Google is somewhat understandable, what with Apple firing Eric Schmidt from their board of directors due to conflicts of interest, and Google entering the smartphone market with the Android OS. Internet Explorer 6 – Microsoft’s Obsolescence Dilemma

anti_ie

As a Web developer, I loathe Internet Explorer 6. It is holding back innovation and progress in the realm of the Web, and the sooner it toddles off to its rightful place in Silicon Heaven, the better for all of us.

Internet Explorer 6 was released by Microsoft on August 27, 2001, shortly after the release of the first version of Windows XP (with versions also available for Windows 98, 2000 and Windows NT4). For such a comparatively ancient piece of software, it still seems to have a large number of adherents, and this is a Very Bad Thing.

Uniting the Disparate

co16-resizeThe Holy Grail of Web development is a language and development environment that unites client-side and server-side programming into one. There has been progress on this front – ASP.NET (using Visual Studio) is probably the best-known, allowing HTML page elements to be directly accessed from the server-side as server controls. It’s a shame the language has so many development overheads, and is, to be blunt, rather bloated, and, of course, being a Microsoft product, requires proprietary server technology. And we like open-source solutions here at Baldwin & Obenauf (as well as solutions that run on a Mac).

The iPhone and Team-Building (or not)

iphone

The iPhone is pretty much the ultimate gadget. But it’s not just a gadget, it’s a game changer. The release of the iPhone initiated a paradigm shift in Internet connectivity. All of a sudden, there’s this device that is universally useful – it’s a phone, a full-featured Internet browser, a GPS, a games console, a book reader, an e-mail and text client, a camera… the list goes on. And, in the short time that the iPhone has been available, it now accounts for over 50% of all mobile Internet access.
